Green Credentials

• Carbon Neutral Energy
  Most datacentres provide the cheapest electricity possible to their customers and offer little flexibility of energy supplier. We negotiate with the facilities management teams of the datacentres we use, and where possible we buy green electricity to supply our equipment. Otherwise we calculate our total carbon emissions and offset them with local schemes.

• Efficient Cooling
  Nearly all the energy going into servers gets turned into heat. Our datacentres use inverter-driven air conditioning and high efficiency uninterruptible power supplies to get the most out of the energy we use. In winter our office is warmed by heat recovered from the server room.

• Virtualisation and Server Sharing
  Other companies run their servers at around 25% load — for only a little more energy consumption, these servers could do far more work! We virtualise our servers to increase utilisation, so that our servers get maximum energy efficiency, while balancing customer needs for increased server performance.

• Lifetime Warranty Equipment
  Most computer hardware has a limited warranty period, and it is common practice within the IT industry to replace equipment as soon as it is out of the warranty period. Where possible Faelix purchases equipment with a lifetime warranty to minimise equipment turnover.

• Optional Landfill Diversion
  What happens when businesses upgrade their equipment or throw away out-of-warranty equipment? A huge amount of functioning equipment is written off by businesses caught in the warranty/upgrade cycle. Some equipment is sent to developing countries, but this still adds "freight miles" to the environmental cost.

  Some of Faelix's servers have been purchased from hardware reconditioning businesses who aim to divert computer waste from landfill. This is not without drawbacks, as we must still guarantee good service to our customers! To ensure reliable service, Faelix either extends warranty with the original manufacturers, or purchase and hold spares on-site, or use Faelix's expertise in delivering high-availability systems by building "resilient clusters" so that failure of an out-of-service component won't affect your business.

• Travel and Transport
  We use public transport as much as possible. We never use planes, even for personal holidays. Our cars have small engines and average over 40mpg. All calculated emissions from travelling are carbon-offset.

• Discount for Green/Eco Projects
  If your business shares the ecological ideals of Faelix, you can take advantage of up to 10% discount on listed hosting prices.
